Garage Door Cable Repair in Tampa
The steel cables that carry your door up and down, and the grooved drums that spool them. When one lets go the door usually goes crooked immediately.
What the cables do
Two steel cables run from the bottom corners of your door up to grooved drums on the torsion shaft. As the springs turn the shaft, the drums wind the cables and lift the door. The springs provide the force; the cables deliver it to the door.
Because they carry the entire load in tension, cables are a wear part. They fray gradually at the bottom bracket where moisture collects, and in Tampa that corrosion happens faster than most of the country. A frayed cable gives you warning if you look for it. A snapped one usually announces itself by the door going instantly crooked.
What cable failure looks like
- The door sits at an angle. One side rose, the other did not. This is the classic snapped-cable signature.
- Visible fraying or rust. Look at the bottom corners where the cable attaches. Broken strands sticking out mean it is on the way.
- Cable slack or off the drum. A loose cable hanging beside the track, or one that has jumped its grooves.
- The door drops faster on one side. Uneven travel almost always traces back to cable or drum condition.
- A grinding noise from a top corner. Often a drum that is worn or has shifted on the shaft.

Cables and springs often fail together
A spring failure dumps load onto the cables suddenly, and a cable failure lets the door drop unevenly against the springs. So when we come out for one, we quote both honestly. Sometimes only the cable needs replacing. Fairly often both do, and doing them in one visit saves a second call-out.
Why drums matter
The drum is the grooved aluminium spool the cable winds onto. Worn grooves let the cable ride out of position, which frays it in exactly the way that leads to the next failure. Replacing a cable onto a worn drum is a short-term fix, so we check drum condition every time and tell you if it is the real culprit.

Why we replace cables in pairs
Same reasoning as springs. Both cables have taken the same number of cycles and the same salt-air exposure. The one that has not snapped yet is the same age as the one that did. At $135 to $195 for the pair against $95 to $145 for one, doing both is straightforwardly better value.

A snapped lift cable, almost always. One side of the door rose while the other stayed put. Sometimes a broken roller or a bent track does the same thing. Either way the door is not stable in that state, so stay clear of it and do not run the opener.
Not safely. A frayed cable is a cable partway through failing, and when it goes the door drops unevenly with real force. If you can see broken strands, stop using the door and get it replaced. It is one of the cheaper repairs on a garage door.
Typically eight to fifteen years, but in Tampa expect the shorter end, and shorter still within a mile or two of salt water. Corrosion at the bottom bracket where moisture sits is what usually ends them rather than wear from cycling.
Not always, but check. A spring failure puts sudden shock load through the cables, so we inspect both whenever we replace a spring. If the cables are sound we leave them and say so. If they are frayed, doing them in the same visit saves a second trip.
The grooved spool at each end of the torsion shaft that winds the cable. Worn grooves let the cable ride out of position and fray, so fitting a new cable to a worn drum just repeats the failure. We check drum condition on every cable job.
We do not advise it. The cables are connected to a torsion system under high tension, and releasing that tension safely needs winding bars and training. The cable itself is inexpensive; the risk is in what holds it. This is a repair where the labour is the whole point.
Both have the same age, cycle count and corrosion exposure, so the survivor is not far behind. The pair costs $135 to $195 against $95 to $145 for one, which makes doing both the obvious economic choice as well as the safer one.
Usually 45 to 75 minutes for a cable pair including rebalancing and a full cycle test. If the door has come off track or the drums need replacing, allow closer to two hours. Both are stocked on the truck.
Normal wear and corrosion is not — that is maintenance, and carriers are consistent about it. Cable damage caused by a specific event, like a vehicle hitting the door, often is. We document the cause and provide an itemised estimate either way.
