What a broken spring actually is
Your garage door weighs between 150 and 400 pounds. The opener does not lift that weight — it could not. The springs do. The opener only provides the nudge that gets a counterbalanced door moving. This is why a door with a broken spring will not open even though the motor sounds perfectly healthy.
Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the door opening and store energy by twisting. When one fails it releases that energy instantly, which is the bang people describe as a gunshot from the garage. Older and lighter doors sometimes use extension springs instead, mounted along the horizontal tracks on either side.
How to confirm it is the spring
- Look at the shaft above the door. A broken torsion spring shows an obvious two-inch gap in the coil. It is unmistakable once you know to look.
- The opener runs but the door barely moves. Motor sounds fine, door lifts an inch and stops, or strains and reverses.
- The door is brutally heavy by hand. Pull the red release cord and try lifting. A balanced door feels like 8 to 10 pounds. A door with a failed spring feels like the several hundred pounds it actually weighs.
- The top section looks bent. Often happens when an opener keeps trying to lift a door the springs are no longer helping.
- A cable has come loose or unspooled. Frequently accompanies spring failure, since the load redistributes suddenly.

Cycle rating is the number that matters
Springs are rated in cycles, one cycle being one open and one close. Builder-grade springs are typically rated around 10,000 cycles, which for a family opening the door four times a day works out to roughly five to seven years. We fit 20,000-cycle springs as standard because the cost difference at our buying price is small and it roughly doubles the interval before you need us again.

You should not, and we say that knowing it costs us nothing to tell you. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and it requires proper winding bars rather than improvised tools. It is the most dangerous common repair in a house and the part itself is not where the cost is.
Because both have run the same number of cycles since installation. The unbroken one is at the same point in its life and typically fails within a year. Doing the pair now avoids a second call-out and a second day of being stranded, and it costs less than two visits.
Usually 45 to 90 minutes for a standard two-spring door, including rebalancing and a full cycle test afterwards. We stock common wire sizes on the truck, so the large majority of spring calls are finished on the first visit.
With the 20,000-cycle springs we fit as standard, roughly ten to fourteen years for a household opening the door around four times a day. Builder-grade 10,000-cycle springs give about half that. Heavier use scales the figure down proportionally.
You can sometimes lift it manually, but you should not. Without spring counterbalance you are lifting the door full weight, several hundred pounds, with nothing holding it up if your grip fails. Do not park under it and do not keep pressing the opener — that is how you strip the gears too.

Not necessarily — plenty of lighter single-car doors are correctly specified with one. What matters is that the spring is sized for the door weight. If a single spring is undersized we will tell you, and converting to a two-spring system usually gives smoother travel and longer life.
